Sometimes it's more convenient to play the barre chord than the open chord.
Also, at the end of the lines in the verses, he likes to play the C# (note, not chord) 
the A chord (second fret on the b string if you're playing an open A chord or sixth fret 
the g string if you're playing the barre chord.
If this doesn't make sense, disregard it.
