I put stuff out there for a guy playing solo acoustic guitar.
I like open chords for the bass & resonation. I’ll always give
the lyrics and enough tab to get you going. I’m sure all the chords
have more technical names but when I’m playing I use this for a
reference. -Steve
I tune to standard 440 but one fret lower. So E is Eb etc.
E A D G B E
The * is just sliding your finger down a fret for the bass
line note then back to the chord shape
Chord Shapes:
Bm(intro*) A A* G G* Bm D C C* Em F#m(barre) F#
e|--2-----------0-0-----0-0----0----2---3-3----0---2----------0--|
B|--0-----------0-0-----0-0----0----3---3-3----0---2----------0--|
G|--4-----------6-6-----4-4----4----2---0-0----0---2----------3--|

E|--0-----------5(4)----3(2)---0----0---0-0----0---2----------2--|

The Bm** is another chord where you pull off
and on with the pinky. This repeats continuously
through the verses.

[Bm intro*] You called me up on the phone today
Struggling with the right words to say
Time can change a thing or two
Time has changed the lives of me and you
But you know [A][A*][A] [G][G*][G]
it could have been [Bm] different dad
[Bm**] The word brings back a sweet memory
I’m sitting on a bluff on a broken tree
By my side a distinguished man
Giving me encouragement, telling me I can
And you know [A][A*][A] [G][G*][G]
You’re not there
[D] You say Son let’s forget the past
I want another chance, gonna make it last
You’re begging me for a brand new start
Trying to mend a bridge that’s been blown apart,
But you know [C][C*][C] [G][G*][G]
You never [Bm] built it dad
(a nice slide down the E string into the chord works well here)
[Em] And so I sit here through the [F#m] night,
And I write myself to [G] sleep,
And time keeps ticking [Bm][Bm**][Bm] [A][A*][A] [G][G*][G]
[Bm][Bm**][Bm] [G][G*][G] [F#] [Bm][Bm**][Bm]
[Bm**] Time has made you finally realize
Your loneliness and your guilt inside
You’re reaching for something you never had
Turning around now you’re looking back
And you know [A][A*][A] [G][G*][G] I’m not there
[D] You say “Son, let’s forget the past
I want another chance, gonna make it last”
You’re begging me for a brand new start,
Trying to mend a bridge that’s been blown apart,
But you know [C][C*][C] [G][G*][G]
You never [B] built it dad.
You never [A] built it dad.
You never [G] built it dad.
You never [F#] built it dad.
You never [Em] built it dad. [Bm]
--This reminds me of Cat’s in the Cradle by Harry Chapin.
If you listen to it you’ll se what I’m getting at. Good luck. Peace.
