For the beginners::: You take the A chord and play the bass note (from that chord, Ex.: 
bass from the C chord is the 3 fret on the A-string) and then you strum the other notes 
the bass note ( I couldn't tell if he used them or not :S)
The strumming I prefer here is :::  ↓  ↓↑
