Ok so this is my first tab but I realized there is no correct tab out there
for this song. There are two versions of this song, one in the studio, and
one live (as seen on youtube.com/jackjohnsonvevo), the studio version has a
capo on the 2nd fret while the live version he plays without a capo. I will
tab the live version but if you want the studio version slap on a capo on an
electric and just raise the entire thing 2 frets.
(as a disclaimer i may have missed a few strums because this is the way i
play the song)
the song is in standard tuning.

(Last time through chorus)
F#
e|-22-------|
B|-22-------|
G|-33-------|
D|-44-------|
A|-44-------|
E|-22-------|
The song then repeats what we have already covered like this:
Verse: 4x (sing comes in again on the 3rd time through)
Chorus: 4x (remember to only play the F#s at the end of the chorus)
After the chorus the break down starts, and it goes like this:
Breakdown: 2x
then just a...
G C 4x D .... for a while
e|-3-------0---| e|-2----|
B|-3-------1---| B|-3----|
G|-0-------0---| G|-2----|
D|-0-------2---| D|-0----|
A|-2-------3---| A|------|
E|-3-----------| E|------|
and that is every thing that is played. As a recap this is how the whole song goes...
Intro: 1x
Verse: 3x
Chorus: 2x
Verse: 4x
Chorus: 4x
Breakdown: 2x... with the song ending on G...
Verse:
Watch you when you say
What you are and when you blame
Everyone, You broken king
Watch you change the frame or
Watch you when you take your aim
At the sum of everything
Chorus:
Cause you and your heart
Shouldn't feel so far apart
You can choose what you take
Why you gotta break and make it feel so hard
Verse:
You lay there in the street
Like broken glass reflecting pieces of the sun
But you're not the flame
You got the people passing by
Because you know what you don't like
It's just so easy, it's just so easy
Chorus:
But you and your heart
Shouldn't feel so far apart
You can choose what you take
Why you gotta break and make it feel so hard
Oh and you and your heart
Shouldn't feel so far apart
You can choose what you take
Why you gotta break and make it feel so hard
Breakdown:
You draw so many lines in the sand
Lost the fingernails on your hands
How you're gonna scratch any backs?
Better hope that time will take our lines away
Take all our lines and
Hope that time will take our lines and
Hope that time will take our lines away
Take all our lines away
(lyrics from directlyrics.com)
As a side note, in the studio version instead of doing the G to C repeat for the
breakdown, Jack plays this:
e|-------------|
B|-------------|
G|---4---------|
D|-55-5---23---|
A|-----333-----|
E|-------------| ... for as long as he would alternate between the two chords. But
he still just plays the solid D chord after that.
thank you and Mahalo,
Alex
