4 + 20
Notes:
In a video I saw Stills play this using just his thumb and index finger;
with the thumb striking the 4th and 6th strings and the index finger
everywhere else.
Structure of the tune:
1 - Intro
2 - Verse
Repeat 1
Repeat 2
Repeat 1
Repeat 2
I have tried to be as accurate as possible with respect to the rhythm bars
(the notes between the bars being struck on the up beat), no guarantees.
Two variations of <4> are:
|--------4--------------| |--------------4-----------|
|--2--0--------5--------| |--2--0--5--0-----5--------|
<4> |--------------------0--| |-----------------------0--|
|-----------------0-----| |--------------------------|
|-----------------------| |--------------------------|
|--0--------0-----------| |--0-----------0-----0-----|
|__|_____|_____| |_____|_____|_____|
Have fun,
Ben

\______/ (4 beats)
|E<1> |<2>
Four and twenty years ago, I come into this life,
|<3> |<4>
the son of a woman and a man who lived in strife.
|G<5> <6> |A<7>
He was tired of bein' poor,
|G<5> <6> |A<7>
and he wasn't into sellin' door to door,
|G<5> <6> |A<7> |<8>
and he worked like the devil to be more.
A different kind of poverty now upsets me so;
night after sleepless night, I walk the floor and I want to know,
why am I so alone?
Where is my woman, can I bring her home?
Have I driven her away? Is she gone?
Morning comes the sunrise and I'm driven to my bed.
I see it is empty and there's devils in my head.
I embrace the many-colored beast.
I grow weary of the torment can there be no peace?
And I find myself just wishing that my life would simply cease.
